Know Your Beliefs

             It is also important that you know what your beliefs
             are. There are two types of beliefs, long-term and
             short-term beliefs.
             Long-term beliefs are beliefs that define your
             character. For instance, let’s look at the previous
             chapter’s list of character traits and see what we
             could deduce as our long-term beliefs from this list.
             1.  Kind
             2.  Generous
             3.  Compassionate
             4.  Helping the unfortunate.
             From this list, our long-term beliefs would be
             as follows: kindness, generosity, compassion,
             Our short-term beliefs, on the other hand, are our
             situational beliefs. They usually resonate around
             our long-term beliefs but they are episodic
             in nature.
             So, a list of short-term beliefs for the above beliefs
             are as follows:
             1.  I love talking to someone who is alone
                   and depressed.

             2.  I baked a cake for one of my neighbours when she
                   came back from the hospital.

             3.  I was moved by the tragedy in Haiti.

             4.  I help out at my local retirement home each Friday

             5.  I help out at the local food bank every spring
                   and fall.
             By becoming aware of your short-term and long-term
             beliefs, you could act coherently in different
             situations. And this could help you to assert yourself
             in front of others.
