Know Your Beliefs

Posted on: June 30, 2010

It is also important that you know what your beliefs
are. There are two types of beliefs, long-term and
             short-term beliefs.

Long-term beliefs are beliefs that define your
character. For instance, let’s look at the previous
chapter’s list of character traits and see what we
could deduce as our long-term beliefs from this list.

             1.  Kind
             2.  Generous
             3.  Compassionate
             4.  Helping the unfortunate.

From this list, our long-term beliefs would be
             as follows: kindness, generosity, compassion,
             helpful.

Our short-term beliefs, on the other hand, are our
situational beliefs. They usually resonate around
our long-term beliefs but they are episodic
             in nature.

So, a list of short-term beliefs for the above beliefs
             are as follows:

             1.  I love talking to someone who is alone
                   and depressed.

             2.  I baked a cake for one of my neighbours when she
                   came back from the hospital.

             3.  I was moved by the tragedy in Haiti.

             4.  I help out at my local retirement home each Friday
                    afternoon.

             5.  I help out at the local food bank every spring
                   and fall.

By becoming aware of your short-term and long-term
beliefs, you could act coherently in different
situations. And this could help you to assert yourself
             in front of others.

Knowing yourself is the key to happiness, peace, and
             fulfilment.
