In Praise of Average

Posted on: July 8, 2010

Studies have shown that average looking faces are
much more attractive than beautiful faces. Many
fashion models do have very similar looking faces. But
using the word ‘average’ seems to contradict other
common descriptions of beautiful people, such as
people who are extraordinarily good looking.
On the other hand, seeing ‘average’ faces in the
media helps to convince us that the look may be
attainable. As a result, some companies use people
as ideal versions of average in their ad campaigns.
On a personal level, average might translate into
‘fitting in’, being part of your crowd, or being
someone who another person can relate to.
‘Average’ seems to have a survival element attached
to it. Research has found that in birds and animals,
average proportions often reflect good design, with
healthy advantages and longer life spans. Even in
humans, babies who are born considerably larger or
smaller than the average eight pounds are more likely
to have healthy problems during their first year.
Average is a healthy way to be. You don’t have to
compete if you are average. You just fit in with
everyone else. The above average could be a very
lonely group of people because very few people have
above average appearance or perfect physical
So, celebrate yourself. We all fit into different
degrees of average. And that my friends is not only
           acceptable but healthy and good.
